DIY Wedding Decor

We just love working with WCIU, You and Me this Morning. For our segment yesterday we focused on Bold Color a BIG trend this wedding season. If you missed our segment yesterday you can view the video here. Below I have listed all of the details and vendors involved in this segment! Enjoy!

All floral design was provided by my very talented sister-in-law Tiffany Burdick, Owner of The Petal Boutique. We chose to design bold colored pomanders. Each created with carnations! Can you believe how gorgeous they are! Pomanders can be carried by your bridesmaids or used as pew decor. After the ceremony we suggest re-using them as the centerpieces as you see here.

Our Bold Hot Pink linen was provided by Unique Party Rental!

This escort card display is so easy to make. We chose paint chips from a local home improvement store in the various colors of our theme. The very best part of this is the paint swatches are FREE! We punched out the circles with a 3 inch circle craft punch. So all you have to do is write out your table assignments and tack them right to the cork board! We had some fun listing the names for the segment! Zach Morris was invited!

Here is our gorgeous bridal bouquet designed by Tiffany Burdick with The Petal Boutique. It was created with white roses, white peonies, white ranaculus, and white lilacs. We wanted the bouquet to be completely white but have alot of texture! And might I add that the combination of the lilacs and peonies made this bouquet smell wonderful!

To add our bold colors to the bouquet we added a colored ribbon wrap. Doesn't this look fun!

We work with Dessert Designer, Kelly Siebens with Lillycakes and I had been begging her to make a "lillycake cake," and this segment was the perfect opportunity for her to launch this new product! Isn't it great! We had the cakes decorated to match our bold theme as well. This cake held 200 lillycakes!

Bite-sized desserts are such a trend right now and I think this is a great way for Brides and Grooms to have a very fun and creative yet affordable wedding cake.

Wedding Puzzle

This is a custom wedding puzzle used as a guest book by BellaPuzzlesToo shop on Etsy. Not only is it a great activity but a great heirloom to keep. As guests arrive at your wedding they can sign the back of a puzzle piece with a special message for the Bride and Groom. Then throughout the night many of your guests may attempt to put the entire puzzle together

This puzzle has about 60 pieces large enough for signing. They come on 10 piece increments to suite any wedding size. They recommend that you get enough pieces for 70% of your guestlist. But make sure to place your order early as these custom pieces take 14 weeks to produce!

They can even create custom cuts at your request, here are some examples:

1. Two names with a maximum of twelve letters (for example, “Sam & Lindsay”)

2. The couple’s initials (for example, “S & L”).

3. Event date (format will be “Jun 26 2011” or “26 Jun 2011” with no punctuation)
4. Two figure pieces (heart, leaf, animal, or state)

Escort Card or Place Card?

This question has come up quite a bit this wedding season so I decided to share this post again.

These two cards are most often mistaken for the same purpose. But I am here to clear that up!! There is a different purpose for each card.

Escort Card

The Escort card (as shown) is the card that you traditionally find on a large table at the cocktail hour or entrance to the reception. This card is used to "escort" guests to their table. So traditionally the Escort card will list the name of the guest and their table assignment.

Place Card

The Place card is the card that you will find at your "place" setting at the table. This card identifies which seat is yours to sit in at the table.

We had the wonderful opportunity to work with Danica and Eugene on there beautiful Chicago wedding. Thanks to Jessica Johnston Photography we are able to share with you some snapshots of our couples special day!

All of the details were so simple yet stunning!

Danica's bouquet of white and ivory was created with peonies, calla lilies, ranunculus, vendella roses and a slight collar of eucalyptus. It was beautiful!

He is our lovely Bride Danica!

The Bridal party was able to take some amazing photographs at the Elysian Hotel

The weather started with a bit of rain and fog but that didn't phase the day one bit.

Here is our Groom Eugene! He and the Bridal party were smiling all day!

The Reception was held at The Murphy Auditorium

This stunning cake was created by the wonderful Amy Beck Cake Design.

The tables were dressed with blue linen and glass beaded chargers. The floral was still made up of white and ivory but with a touch of pink to add some dimension to the room.

The Bride and Groom along with their guests were dancing all evening. I love a busy dance floor!

Engagement Party

Well the Engagement Party is the time to announce your engagement and celebrate with family and friends. But recently I was asked what is the "correct" etiquette for an engagement party. What kind of Party?
There is actually no standard party format. The most popular types are cocktail and dinner parties,

Who is invited?
Generally the guest list is limited to the couples relatives and close friends.

How do you invite guests?
Written or printed invitations are normally sent, but for an intimate gathering phoned invitations are acceptable.

Do you open the gifts at the party?
Only if gifts are given by everyone should the gifts be opened at the engagement party. After opening the couple should personally thank each guest. However, written thank you's are still required.

Engagement Ring Trends

I am often asked about trends in the wedding industry, so I wanted to share with you some of the beautiful trends we are seeing in Engagement rings this season.

1. Pave

We are seeing micro pave diamonds on engagement rings and bands. We are seeing a trend of pave diamonds with all diamond shapes and settings. We are even seeing rings with pave diamonds on the prongs of the ring. The pave diamonds fit so closely together that you can hardly see any metal. Just what all the ladies want, more sparkle! This ring is by one of my favorite designers Michael B.

2. Halo

This is a trend that started last year and has really taken off. Halo stands for a Halo of diamonds surrounding the main stone. This is being done with all stone types. In most cases the Halo is made up of Pave diamonds. This beautiful Halo ring above is by Simon G.

3. The Solitaire

This is one ring trend that will never fade. There is nothing more beautiful than a round diamond solitaire. It really is a timeless ring and will never be out of style. Another great benefit to the solitaire is that you can dress it up with the wedding band, or just leave its simple elegance. The sparkling solitaire above is from Tiffany and Co.

Holiday Party

We were so excited we were asked to create another event on WCIU's You and Me this Morning. With the holidays just around the corner we are happy to share with you some of our tips and ideas for your holiday party!

Step Number One: Pick a Main Color

In this case we chose Red! But you can choose any color you would like. We incorporated this color in our linen, napkins and centerpeices.

We incorporated the red color in all of the aspects of our centerpieces. We used fabric to wrap clear flower vases to give the table more texture. We also spray painted clear candle sticks from the Dollar Tree red to match.

To really add some dimension to our table we decided to pick red roses and carnations as the flowers. Using these flowers you can make a very lush centerpiece at an affordable cost.

Step 2: Choose an Accent Color

For Christmas the traditional colors are Red and Green, but to avoid being too matchy matchy we only used Green as an accent color. These Green chargers we found at Target were the perfect touch of color our holiday table needed.

Step 3: Add a Personal Touch

This may seem way too simple but it is true, people love to see their name in writing! Especially if you are hosting an event in your home, having designated place settings for each guest makes any event more elegant. We folded the red napkins into a small square and wrapped them in ribbon to look like a present. Then to add that personal touch we printed each guest name on shimmer card stock and used a tag punch to punch out each name. After that we just secured each tag to the ribbon to complete the look.

Holiday Party Secret!

Want to impress your guests with decorative dishes but cant afford to by fancy china? These decorative plates we found at the Dollar Tree! They offer many colors and patterns to choose from.

Step 4: Add a Signature Drink

This drink does not have to be alcoholic it could even be a punch. Having a signature drink gives the guests an opportunity to try a beverage that wouldn't usually order. For this holiday party we used a Peppermint Martini for our signature drink.

Peppermint Martini

Ingredients

•5 ounces of Chopin vodka

•1/2 ounce of Peppermint Schnapps

•Candy canes

•Pour all of your liquid ingredients into a shaker 1/2 full of cracked ice.

•Give a good 20 vigorous shakes and let the shaker rest for half a minute.

•Strain your lucious peppermint martini into 2 martini glasses.

•Add a candy cane in each glass for garnish.

Enjoy!

Step 5: Give each guest a favor to take home

This started when we were all kids. As we were getting ready to leave our friends birthday parties we received a goodie bag to take home filled with treats and toys. I don't see why there is any reason as adults we can't still receive a goodie bag at the end of an event! For this segment we wanted to include a treat special to Chicago. Garrett's Popcorn was the perfect choice.

Candy stations and dessert bars have been very popular at weddings and events. Why not downscale and have one at your holiday party? Here you can see we filled the Garretts popcorn into various vases and inserted a scoop on top. At the center of the table was a gift bag that included a bag to fill with popcorn, a twisty tie to seal your popcorn bag, and a list of favorites foods and drinks for your guests to check out next time they are in your neighborhood!

Step 5: Enjoy yourself!

Holidays are a great time to catch up with friends and family. Save the dishes for later and be a guest at your event!

Black Friday Survival Kit

Looking for a favor for your Thanksgiving guests? How about a Black Friday 2010 Survival Kit. This year I have heard my family talking more about Black Friday than Thanksgiving! So I decided to honor the 5am shoppers with a fun gift!

All of the items above I placed in a simple brown bag and labeled with the Operation Give Thanks thank you prints by Hostess with the Mostess.

On the back of each bag I printed a list of the items included!

Baby Shower on a Budget

A few weeks ago we received a call from WCIU "The U" issuing La Di Events a challenge. They challenged us to plan a gender neutral baby shower for 8-10 guests on a budget of $100. We were asked to use items that are already in our homes and items that are affordable to buy at the store. We were up for the challenge! The "Baby Shower on a Budget" segment aired this Wednesday November 3rd on the WCIU morning show You and Me this Morning. Enjoy the video!

Tablecloth

We used a twin bed sheet from Target! The twin sheet will fit an 8 foot table. If you have a round or oval table you can use a fitted full sheet!

Advice and Wishes

This is a great way for guests to share their advice with the mom to be. We cut up pieces of scrap booking paper that we found at Michaels. Place the scrapbook pieces on a dish or tray you have in your home with a pen or a small point permanent marker. For the advice and wishes sign we printed out the words on the computer and glued it to a piece of folded scrapbook paper. You can set out any clear vase you have in your home for the guests to place their wishes in.

Food

The best way to save money at a shower is to not schedule the party at a meal time. I would recommend 3pm. This way you can just have a few items to eat and save money on food. For the segment we cut up fruit and placed them in glasses I had in my home to make individual portions for each guest. This also saves you money because you do not have to buy plates for the guests to put their food on. We displayed the fruit on a dish I had in my home and to add some flair cut a piece of scrap booking paper to line the dish.

Guest Seating

It is always nice to incorporate your guests in the shower. Ask each guest to mail you a baby photo to be used at the shower. Place each photo in a picture frame, these we found at the dollar store. Place the pictures at each guest place setting so guests can find their seat. It also will be a great conversation piece.

Flowers

I was so excited when I found these sundae dishes at the dollar store. They were perfect for our baby shower theme. We used the sundae dish as a vase for flowers. The flowers we purchased were from Jewel-Osco and we chose flowers that were affordable and matched our theme, mums and carnations.

Cupcake Stand

To make this cupcake stand we took one of the sundae dishes turned it upside down and glued it to a plate from the dollar store with ceramic glue. Now you have a very chic and affordable stand to display your homemade cupcakes at the shower.

Cupcake Flags

Cupcake flags are very popular but you don't have to spend alot of money on them. You can make then yourself. For these flags we traced a tea light candle for the circles on scrapbook paper. Next we cut out the circles and taped a toothpick to one of the two circles. Last we took some stick glue and glued the two circles together. For a finishing touch we added a Wilton baby foot sticker.

Drinks

For the drink we chose a traditional lemonade. To add to the look we sliced up 6 limes and added them to the lemonade. We displayed it in my Colin Cowie drink dispenser. This was not included in the budget because I have this already in my home. But you don't have to use a fancy drink dispenser you could use a pitcher or a punch bowl you have at home. You could also pour individual glasses for guest to take.

Coasters

Instead of playing games at the shower you can set out these baby shower trivia coasters by Wilton. This is a great way to still add some fun to the shower without playing multiple games.

Last Minute Halloween Party Ideas!

Are you interested in throwing a Halloween Party but don't have the time or maybe the budget? Here are some easy and affordable ideas for food, decor and music this Halloween!

FOOD

Pumpkin Cheese Ball

You can change your traditional cheese ball into a pumpkin! All you need to do is cover it with Dorito chips and make the face with black olives and the stem with a pickle!

Pretzel Fingers

Also if you look to the left of this picture you will see "finger food" You can cover pretzel rods with white chocolate and add chopped almonds for the fingernails. Then for the container you can cover a cup with an old shirt sleeve! So Easy!

Spooky Dips

An easy way to make your dip more festive is to just add food coloring! Here you can see not only did we dye the dips but we also placed them in small plastic cups and cut out the top of the pumpkins to display them in.

Ear Wax Sticks

This snack is creepy and fun!! These sticks are made to look like used q-tips. Place a small marshmellow on either side of a small pretzel, then dip the marshmallow's in butterscotch!! So Yummy!

Worms

Buy a few different types on gummy worms and arrange them all on a platter. You can add a few fake spiders for decor!

DECOR

Spiderwebs

No need to go out and buy a bunch of decorations Just cover your current decor with spiderwebs! You can find bags of fake spiderwebs at the dollar store. A little goes a long way...literally. Stretch the spiderwebs all around your home. Add tiny plastic spiders for a finishing touch.

Lighting

Everything looks scarier in the dark. Change out some of your traditional lights and replace then with black lights. You can find these in the Halloween section at most stores. Or also check the local hardware stores.

Candles are also great to create that haunted look. Stop by the dollar store and get some black or white tapers to light throughout your home.

MUSIC

Satellite Music

If you have digital cable you probably have a series of music channels. You can turn on the seasonal channel and listen to spooky selections all night!!

AOL Radio

You can stream the AOL Radio Halloween Station from your Computer for free!

Ipod

You could also make a fun playlist for your party on your IPOD. Some of the songs that are on my playlist include:

"Ghostbusters"!!

Operation Give Thanks

Pink Wedding Gown!

My dream has come true, a tasteful and glamorous blush PINK wedding gown! Aubrey and I attended Chicago Social Brides, Bridal Walk on Oak St, and even though we were there for her, cause she is engaged!! (Not sure if I had announced that yet?) I fell in love with this Palazzo wedding gown!! It is even more beautiful in person. The silhouette is absolutely amazing and the color is just enough that its not overwhelming. Wedding Language

Its funny how the world that we live in with texting and social media has changed the way we communicate with one another. Acronyms have taken over everywhere we go. I find myself using them all the time while taking notes and communicating with our clients. But I can't fool myself into thinking that every one knows what my favorite wedding acronyms stand for. In doing some research for this post I found that there are way more that I even knew about.

The steps are easy:

Chalkboard Photo Guest Book

Looking for a fun way for your guests to share their wedding wishes? How about a chalkboard photo guest book. Have I mentioned that I really like chalkboards? We designed this chalkboard photo guest book for our clients Megan and Matt. Megan and Matt's outdoor rehearsal dinner took place on Friday June 18th. Just hours before the dinner started there were tornado sirens and we had to run for cover!! It was quite scary I might add. But the storm blew through and we were able to have all of our dinner elements outdoors as planned!! As guests arrived to the rehearsal dinner they were greeted by Derek from Innerlight photography and were asked to write a message for the Bride and Groom and pose for a snapshot. I loved how this all turned out. And a big thank you to mother nature for clearing the rain for this occasion! The messages are so fun to read!!! Enjoy!

Not sure how to complete your table scape when you are having a buffet? How cute are these custom utensil holders we designed for our clients Megan and Matt. These utensil holders contained a plastic fork, spoon and knife as well as a napkin. This dinner was a delicious Buffet of chicken and pork chops and all the sides to match catered by Fay's BBQ. So in order to put some more pizazz on the tables we decided to have the utensils already at each guests seat. Many guests chose to take the bags home as a keepsake or for scrap booking! La Di Real Wedding: Courtney and Kevin

We would love to share with you the very glamorous wedding of Courtney and Kevin. It was a beautiful day in May, and the perfect day for their Chicago wedding. Courtney wanted a Vintage Glam look for her wedding day. Take a look! Special thank you to the photographers at StudioThisIs for providing us with these photographs to share with you today. Courtney and her bridesmaids all got ready for the big day at W City Center, Chicago. Rosie and Robyn from RBombshell Beauty were there on site to do all of the ladies hair and makeup.

Courtney was stunning in her one shouldered silhouette wedding gown by designer Anne Barge.

Before Courtney could start her day, all of her bridesmaids signed her shoes with a message. The theory is that when the night ends the most legible message would be the next Bride to be!

How beautiful is this bridal party! All of the Bridesmaids were able to pick a dress that would be flattering to their figure instead of wearing the same gown. Courtney picked a color palette of metallic and pastels and then let the ladies shop!

And we can't forget about the gentlemen. Here is Kevin and his Groomsmen posing for some shots at the W city center.

Courtney and Kevin were married at Notre Dame De Chicago.

On their way out of the church Courtney and Kevin were greeted by their guests waving hand made ribbon wands.

After the ceremony Courtney and Kevin and their bridal party traveled to Union Station for some indoor and outdoor photographs.

All day the bridal party rode in style in a Trolley from Windy City Trolley. Look at the shades!!

Courtney and Kevin's reception was held at the modern Latin restaurant Nacional 27.

Here is my cameo bending down to lift up Courtney's train, the photographer got me!

How stunning is this room shot of the event space at Nacional 27. The restaurant was transformed to Vintage Glam with the help of Frost Lighting, Classic Party rentals linens, and floral decor by Hello Darling. As you can see there are two levels of seating, tables and booths. All centered around the circle dance floor with gorgeous chandeliers and gobos illuminating the entire room. The palm leaves were added to style the room like an old Havana marketplace.

A few close ups of the floral designs. The dining tables were decorated with vintage glass, milk glass and silver vessels. Each table was unique with its glass and flower combinations. The table numbers, menus and escort signs were all custom designed by Float Paperie.

The unique vintage vessels were filled with different variations of peonies, succulents, stock, hydrangea, ranunculus, frilly tulips, dusty miller and brunia.

The tables were lit with silver and gold mercury glass votives, as well as crystal strand votives and luminaries.

Courtney and Kevin's wedding cake was custom designed by Take the Cake. This 4-tier wedding cake was covered in pearlized rolled fondant and white sugar flowers.

Here is a closer look at the sugar flowers. Since I know you can't see inside the flavors consisted of, white lemon zest buttermilk cake with two layers of raspberry conserve/cream cheese filling and one layer of cream cheese/fresh raspberries. That's not all, they also have chocolate fudge cake filled with one layer of each, chocolate fudge, salted caramel filling and cream cheese filling.
YUM!

The dance floor was filled all night long thanks to the musical styling of Fig Media!

We had such a wonderful time working with Courtney and Kevin for their Stunning Vintage Glam wedding day. We wish them happiness and health in their life together!

The shine stops here, with Cynthia Sally

This summer was quite possibly the most hot and humid summer we have had in years. As I worked each wedding in the months on May through July I found myself keeping blotting papers in my pocket all day! My makeup just felt like it was melting off my face and each time I caught myself in the mirror I was very shiny. With the long wedding day hours I work I don't have time to be reapplying my makeup all day. So I reached out to my friend and fellow wedding professional Cynthia Sally for a makeup makeover.

When we met she asked me to bring my current makeup bag so she could look through it and detemine the problem. I was a bit scared to have her look at my bag, I dont really use one brand and some of the items I have in my bag are quite possibly past their experation date. (two years for most makeup, or as a friend once told me if your lipgloss smells like crayons its gotta go!)

But you have all been there with that makeup you love!

So after disceting my makeup bag she determined that I did not have enough steps to my base to make it last all day. I was just wearing a Mac Studio Fix pressed powder and bronzer, which both happened to contain light reflectors (Hello shine!!). Funny no on told me that when I bought it! So not the right choice for my skin type and long days!

So we were off to Sephora to find the best base makeup for me that would stop the shine! Here is my new makeup that we bought!!

Make Up For Ever Invisible Primer. Love this it really does do the trick!

Make Up For Ever High definition Foundation. I havent worn liquid foundation in many years and I really like this one. The pump keeps it from getting to messy.

Lorac wet/dry oil free powder. I am using this to set my foundation in place! I have to say the combination on these three products has solved my shine problem!! And I havent had to carry the blotting papers!

Cynthia also recommended the Urban Decay Eyeshadow Primer Potion. I am in LOVE with this. My eyeshadow goes on so much better and really lasts all day. Even though I came for foundation I am so glad I purchased this!!

So don't just take my word for it!! Here is the expert advice from the expert herself, Cynthia Sally on eliminating shine:

"Eliminating shine is no easy task but here are some tips to get you shine free:

Even if your skin is naturally oily, that does not mean that you should deprive it of moisture. If your skin does not get moisture, it will produce MORE oil to compensate for it. So moisturize every day, even if you feel that your skin is oily.

Use primers. Primers are especially nice for your eyelids to keep the eyeshadow on if you produce a lot of oil around the eye area. My favorite is Urban Decay's Primer Potion. For the face a primer with silicone in it will help absorb the oil so it doesnt come up on the surface. I recommend Smashbox Photo Finish Foundation Primer.

Always set your foundation with a powder. If you still get oily throughout the day, use blotting papers to absorb excess oil so you dont keep layering powder over powder.

Do not use shimmer blushes if you have oily skin, use matte blush.

We cannot stop our skin from producing oil but we can sure do our best to hide it!"

Pretty in Pink!

La Di Real Wedding: Heidi and Jon

Hey it's Aubrey....I wanted to share just a few of my favorite photos with you taken by Kara Schultz Photography from Heidi and Jon's damask themed wedding this past May. The ceremony was held at Naperville's Naper Settlement, followed by a reception at the Danada House in Wheaton. I had so much fun working with Heidi, Jon and their families, while trying to stay cool in the 92 degree weather!!! I hope you all enjoy them as much as I do!!

The Danada House grounds provided the perfect setting for outdoor spring bridal party and family photos!
Heidi's bridesmaids looked stunning in their black dresses that were accented with magenta bouquets designed by Kristen at Kio Kreations.

Heidi and Jon's fun,easy-going spirit made for an enjoyable wedding day!

Czarina from the Chair Couture jazzed up Heidi and Jon's reception hall with black and white chair covers, while My Chef Catering adorned each table with damask table runners.

Each table number featured a snapshot of the bride and groom at the same age as the correlating table number....super easy and cute idea!

Menu cards were placed at each setting to give guests a heads up of the delicious food to come!

The damask theme didn't just stop with menu cards and table runners, but was also incorporated into the wedding cake.

Candy stations have been all the rave lately and Heidi didn't slack on making her's one of the best! Guests could not get enough of these sweet treats, packing their favor boxes with M&M's, Gummy Orange Rings (the Bride's favorite) and Starburst's (the Groom's favorite). A majority of my night was spent refilling and refilling some more!! Heidi's Mom and Dad were a huge help in making the candy station a success!

I love those brides who are out on the dance floor the whole night, and Heidi was definitely one of those brides!! Seriously, who doesn't like to dance at weddings??

Mmmmmm, Lillycakes. Well I was introduced to my new favorite treat by one of my clients. She was raving about them to the point that she emailed me a review of what she liked about each flavor. So after some not so painful arm twisting I called up Kelly Siebens the creator of Lillycakes to have a taste. I believe my exact words to her in my email reply immediately following my taste was subject: Lillycake Coma, Body: "I have just tasted heaven on a stick"!What is a Lillycake? Well first the name is after Kelly's adorable daughter Lilly!
A Lillycake is moist cake encased in chocolate on a stick. Or as I have renamed it "Heaven on a stick."
Since, my first taste which I believe was Wednesday June 23rd, I have already had two more batches of Lillycakes! Well I shared of course!! Above you see the very adorable Lillycakes that Kelly made special for my 3 year wedding anniversary. I loved that she took the time to decorate them special for our day!

My Husband has a sweet tooth just like me, maybe even worse, and he had 2 Lillycakes on the way home from Kelly's house! His personal favorite is Chocolate!

I am a big fan of the Red Velvet, and Lemon. Which funny enough I told Kelly that I was not a "lemon" type of girl and she said that I had to try it. Guess what Kelly, you were right!!

The Growing Tree

As each year goes by the trees grow, their branches stretch larger and taller with every year that passes. For this reason we decided to showcase how Trevor had grown through the years by hanging his photos in this Manzanita tree centerpeice. Trevor, my husbands relative, graduated from Dekalb Highschool on June, 5th. Here is a snapshot of this graduation decor.

His cakes were created by my mother in Law, she doesnt have her own business, but I am always telling her to start one! Her buttercream frosting (Shown here) is to die for. Ok I am going to stop talking about it because it makes me hungry! If you are interested in her cakes contact me here.

Here are the centerpieces created by The Petal Boutique, my very talented sister-in-law. Orange roses and curly willow were used in these arrangements.

The party was great! Simple decor and arrangements to celebrate Trevors Graduation.

Had to sneak this one in! Here is my husband assisting with the placement of the chair cushions after the rain had stopped. He is sometimes with to help with local events and this time I caught him on camera!!

La di Real Wedding: Dorsae and Lewis

Last November we had the opportunity to work with Dorsae and Lewis for their wedding. While living in Houston the couple needed assistance planning their wedding back home in Chicago. There was no detail missed for this elegant affair. Take a look! All photographs provided by Jai Girard Photography. The crushed velvet wedding programs were flown if from Berings, in Houston, TX

The Event floral design was created by Chicago's Daniels Discriminating Floriculture. To accent the 155 foot aisle at Rockefeller Memorial Chapel, simple white rose pave balls suspended by crystals and placed on every 5th pew.

Here you see two tall cylinder vases topped with white rose pave balls with crystals raining down the outside of the vase at the halfway point down the aisle.

The Crimson color of the Bridesmaids gowns partnered with the white fur wraps was absolutely stunning!

The Brides stunning Ball gown and Cathedral length veil was designed by Priscilla of Boston.

The Reception was held at the Palmer House, Empire Ballroom. The guests were greeted at the staircase and escorted to their table.

The Empire Room was transformed into a classic winter wonderland. The Guest tables were decorated with Manzanita snow trees draped with crystals, hanging candles and a variety of white floral. Five Crystal candle sticks of varying heights surrounded the centerpieces.

The linens were a gorgeous Silver Brocade, with pearl embossed design and a satin ribbon finish.

The dance floor was a sparkling silver, and the Bride and Groom's monogram was projected in the center as guests arrived. The Chameleon chairs were covered with a white cowl back and crystal broach, all provided by Classic Party Rental.

Each place setting featured silver burst chargers (Classic Party Rental), silver lamoure napkins and a stunning tri-fold menu book

The Bride and Groom sat at a sweetheart table decorated with rose pave balls and candlelight. The collage of the bride and grooms engagement photographs provided by Exceed Photo, was displayed behind the sweetheart table.

The Brides bouquet was made to reflect her mothers bridal bouquet. It was made with White roses and dripped with crystals.

The cake was beautiful on the outside and the inside. This 7 tier cake from Take the cake featured these delicious flavors:coconut cake with coconut butter cream and pineapple filling, strawberry cake with strawberry cream filling, Italian cream cake with cream cheese filling and chocolate fudge cake with two layers of salted caramel butter cream and one layer of creme brulee. Delicious!

Above you see the detailed presentation of the one of the meal choices for the evening. Stuffed Lobster tail and Filet Mignon. This included Canadian cold water lobster tail with crab cake stuffing, lemon butter, 6oz prime aged Filet Mignon with a cognac cream reduction, buttermilk mashed potatoes and asparagus and red pepper.

Dorsae and Lewis danced their first dance to Nat King Cole's "Unforgettable", performed by musician Marcus Gentry and the Grammy winning gospel singer Yolanda Adams.

Later in the evening Dorsae did a quick dress change and surprised Lewis with a choreographed dance and dancers from Be the Groove Productions.

Chalkboard Seating Assignment

While there are many options out there for seating assignments at a wedding, this one I really love. While attending a conference this spring I saw this great idea, Thanks Sasha! My Client was looking for something outside of escort cards for her seating assignment and I suggested a chalkboard. Instead of going out and purchasing one, I took on the diy project. Here is the lovely finished product below. I will show you exactly how I made it so you can for your next wedding or event! I took a trip out to Lowe's paint department and asked a few questions about using chalkboard paint. I was told that in order for the chalkboard paint to coat evenly on the plywood I would need to first prime the surface. This is exactly the primer I bought for the project, Kilz latex 2.

After that is was off to locate the Chalkboard paint, which wasn't hard because there was only one option to choose from. Here it is Valspar Chalkboard paint.

For the plywood I decided to choose one of the precut pieces at Lowe's. I would have no clue and no fingers if I even attempted to cut the plywood myself. So thank you Lowe's for having a precut section!! I chose to use the Birch plywood because it has a very smooth surface which meant no sanding needed! This piece was ½ inch thick x 2 wide x 4 tall.

Day One: I primed the surface using a paint roller. I thought that it would be 1. Quicker and 2. Smoother using a roller. But you might prefer to use a brush. I let the primer dry overnight.

Day Two: Here you can see the white primer that I am painting over with the first coat of chalkboard paint, again using a roller. I let that dry overnight.

Day Three: I painted the second coat of chalkboard paint, and let that dry overnight.

Here is a close up of the finished product with the names of the guests written with a chalk marker. The best part is, my client is going to take the chalkboard to her office to use now.

Baby Girl Shower

Last week I shared with you the invitations we designed for my good friends baby shower. Today you will be able to see all of the other elements for this custom designed baby girl shower! We started with a color palette of light pink, light green and white. The invitations were based on a bedding collection from Serena and Lily.

After the invitations were designed, I sat down with my very talented Sister in law, Tiffany Burdick with The Petal Boutique to design these gorgeous floral arrangements.

The floral we picked for this pink, green and white color palette were light pink stock, Trachellium, mini green hydrangea, green tea roses, Queen Anne's lace, green hanging Amaranthus, mini pink carnations, and pink titanic roses.

I love how fresh and sweet the flowers looked, perfect for a baby girl's shower!

We chose to arrange all of the flowers in square white ceramic vases

All of the linens were purchased from The BBJ Linen Store, and custom sewn to fit each table.

Our Mommy to be wanted a sweets table to be a part of her shower. The requests she had were funfetti cupcakes and one of her favorites powdered sugar brownies.

I have to warn you these next few pictures might make you hungry! I am a huge sweets person and had to hold myself back from stealing a few bites of my sweets table creation before the guests arrived. Although since I made most of these treats I was able to do a little taste testing along the way...shhhhh.

Great view of the entire sweets table. It included Nana's apple cake, Oreo balls, chocolate chip cookies, mint meltaways, Trinidad's, chocolate covered pretzels, funfetti cupcakes, snicker doodle cookies, and powdered sugar brownies. Yummmm!

We had three different drink options for the guests, water, ginger ale punch and the raspberry lemonade shown here. Love this drink dispenser by Colin Cowie. It has a separate compartment for the ice so it keeps your drink cool but it does not get watered down! Genius!

We couldn't have a baby shower without the food. Veggies, fruit, cheese and sausage, mixed green salad, Cole slaw, potato salad, Italian beef, and pasta were on the menu.

When the guests arrived they were asked so sign into the guestbook and leave a wish or piece of advice for the mommy to be.

Loved this one and had to share it. It says "What happens at Grandmas, stays at Grandmas"

Once the gift opening had started the guestbook was used to record all the gifts that Jenny received.

We had one boy in attendance at the baby shower. Little Baby Austin, Jenny's nephew. So sweet!

Jenny was smiling the entire shower, especially when she received this dress! I had such a great time designing and participating in this shower. I just can't wait for the little "diva" to arrive!

While attending a conference in early April, I was introduced to wedding professionals who are highly invloved with this wonderful nonprofit, Wish Upon a Wedding.

As the World’s first nonprofit wedding wish granting organization, Wish Upon a Wedding provides weddings at destinations across the United States for individuals facing life-threatening illness. It is a chance for couples to enjoy a very special day, without any thoughts of existing health issues, while surrounded by their closest family and friends.

Officially launched in January of 2010, Wish Upon a Wedding currently has 15 chapters to serve Wish Applicants. They service couples residing in or wishing to get married within 300 miles of any one of their chapter locations.

Chicago is one of the current Wish Upon a Wedding Chapters. They just completed their first wish this April. See the Video below

To get things up and rolling I decided to create a few products for my social gatherings. One of our first projects was my birthday invitations.

Sometimes you just can envision exactly what you want for your invitation and that is what happened with my birthday invitation. I wanted it to be rustic, I wanted a fun font, I LOVE paisley, and so we were able to capture all of my requests in this custom invitation.

Yes I have to admit if you didn't already know, I am a little bit country!

Megans Bridal Shower Part 2

Yesterday we featured Megan's Bridal Shower Part 1 on the blog. In part one I shared the meal and decor from Megan's shower that I co hosted this past weekend and Durand State Bank in Durand, IL. Today I wanted to share with you the games and gifts from the shower. As you can see above, the first game that the guests played was "Who Knows the Bride and Groom."

Each guest was asked to answer the questions and the guest with the most correct answers won a prize.

The answers were read out load and the bride to be was able to elaborate on any questions from the guests.

Our second game was one that I had never played before. It was Bridal Poetry. Each guest was asked to draw a word from each bowl. One bowl had household words like, dishes, leftovers, etc. The other bowl had sensual words like sexy and erotic! Each guest was asked to write a poem to the bride using the two words that they had drawn.

I loved the grandmas brainstorming together! Here is what they came up with. It read "it is not erotic to serve leftovers all the time" How funny is this game!!

Here is another example. She has underlined her words, they were "Physical" and "Power Tools

each guest read their poems for the Bride to declare the winner!!!

And last but not least! What would a shower be without gifts!!!

Megan's soon to be Mother-in-law showered her with gifts to celebrate Megan's Fiance's love for farming! She got Grill tools...

Megan's Bridal Shower Part 1

This weekend I had the opportunity to co host a wedding shower for my good friend and Client Megan. We had a great time and wanted to share with you all of the details. The shower was hosted at the Durand State Bank in Durand IL. Since Megan is using black and white damask with a red accent for her wedding, we decided to change to color scheme a bit for the shower. We paired black and white damask with hot pink and orange. I love how the colors popped!

Here you can see the popcorn station that we designed for the shower. We ordered original, cheese, caramel and my favorite parmesan and garlic popcorn from momandpopcorn.com.

Here you see the cupcake wraps from Kitchen Krafts to let guests have a taste before choosing their flavor to take home.

to toe!!!! LOVE these shoes.

They featured, hydrangea, hot pink spray roses, orange circus roses, fuchsia stock and mokara orchids

Tiffany used rose stems to create a more modern arrangement for the popcorn station.

The Bride was in love with the smell of the roses!

We created a wrist corsage for Megan to finish off her look!

These are my lovely co hosts carrying out lunch for all of the guests.

Instead of having a lunch buffet each guest was given a prepacked individual lunch.

Looks yummy! huh! The best part of this idea if you are hosting an event is that clean up is a snap. Everyone placed their garbage back in the bags and we collected and disposed of them.

After lunch the bride could hardly wait to steal a taste of the popcorn.

Easter Candy Buffet

Instead of Easter Baskets for everyone this Easter, I decided to prepare a Candy Buffet. It was a hit with my family. Especially my younger cousins. I have provided pictures below for you all to see.

These Sweettart Sour Bunnies were the most popular item on the Buffet and I have to admit I had my fair share!

I am cohosting a shower next weekend and we will be doing a popcorn Buffet very similar to this set up. Stop back next week to see that set up!

Apothecary Drink Dispensor

Ahhhh, doesnt this look refreshing! I recieved this exact Apothecary drink dispensor as a gift for Christmas last year. Since then it has been the talk of all of my social gatherings.

I love to use it for pink lemonade and float lemons for a touch of extra flavor. This is a great purchase for any type of shower or event. I love it and knew you all would as well.

Photo Booth Strip Picture Frame

Martha Stewart weddings featured this very creative idea in the Winter 2010 Anniversary Issue. I love the idea! Here is the description from the website below:

Strips of a Lifetime! Having a photo booth for your guests is a fun, interactive alternative to a traditional guest book. To keep that playful and conversation-starting spirit going long after the event, frame the strips and display them on your walls. Most people hide them away between the covers of an album, but why do that when a cinematic collage like this is an instant touchstone -- a reminder of who was there to witness your vows -- not to mention a visual wow. What you'll need for the project: card stock that fits your frame, along with 20 to 30 photo strips per collage. Be sure to take your time deciding what order they should go in; you could place them randomly or divide them into friends and relatives, for example. La Di Real Wedding: Naomi and Andy

This October we were able to work with Naomi and Andy for their beautiful fall wedding. Here is a snapshot of their wedding day at the Oak Brook Bath and Tennis Club. All Photos provided by Heather Parker Photography.

Instead of the traditional escort card carmel apples were adorned with leaves with the name of the guest and table number.

Rolf's created a three tier white butter cream cake. It was decorated with a white fondant bow and Bride and Groom Marzipan Monkeys.

Instead of sitting at a head table Naomi and Andy decided to have a sweetheart table just for two.

The Chair Couture covered each guests chair with a brown cover and champagne sash tied in a side knot.

Due to a rainy afternoon, we were forced to use our plan B and move the ceremony inside. Here you see the chair decorations provided by Naomi.

Kio Kreations provided all of the vibrant fall flowers. Here you see the arrangements that we attached to the indoor archway.

The ceremony aisle was decorated with fall leaves on either side. Here the adorable flower girls added the final touch of petals for Naomi's entrance.

Naomi was absolutely stunning, her makeup was provided by makeup Artist Cynthia Sally.

Loved the bouquets, the color was breathtaking, all provided by Kio Kreations.

After the ceremony, we were able to take the Bride and Groom outside for photography with Heather Parker.

It was a great for all of us to work with a couple so in love!

To add a little fun for the guests, Naomi and Andy provided a Photo booth from Gem Productions.

Children at the Wedding

This is a common topic that comes up when making your guest list for the wedding. How to inform guests that children are not invited, or how to set limits on the number of children invited. When discussing etiquette I also reference the queen of etiquette, Emily Post:

How to let guests know that children are not invited:

Simple. If children are not invited, the proper way to communicate this is to write only the parents' names on the outer and inner envelopes on your invitations. It is inappropriate to write "No Children" on invitations. If you would like the wedding day to be adults only the best way to convey that message is to spread the word to your close family and friends.

How to set limits when inviting children:

One option is to draw the line by setting an age limit, for example inviting children 10 and over. Other ideas include inviting only the children of close family members and/or children of the wedding party. Either way once you have made your decision make no exceptions, since doing so will cause more hurt feelings than staying firm.

La Di Real Wedding: Jamie and Ryan

This Fall we had the pleasure of working with Jamie and Ryan for their wedding. I absolutely loved the color palette for this wedding. The Deep Plum and Apple Green was so stunning. We had a great time working together and could not have asked for more perfect weather in September. Here is a snapshot of Jamie and Ryan's wedding. Loved that the Groomsman decided the bring their Wii to keep them occupied at the church. They had a blast and their wait to walk down the aisle didn't seem so long!

Meanwhile the ladies relaxed and enjoyed their time being beautified by the ladies of Sharon Daniel Salon.

The flower girl was absolutely adorable the whole day. She truly was a mini version of the bride!

The color theme was represented well in the bridesmaids bouquets provided by Phillips Flowers. Each bouquet was created with Green Cymbidium Orchids, Purple Dendrobium Orchids, and Purple Calla Lily's.

Here is the beautiful Bride Jamie. She held that smile all day long. They are such a happy couple.

The Bridesmaids lit up the room with their fabulous Apple Green dresses from J. Crew. Check out the pockets!! Love that!

When the guests entered Medinah Baptist Chruch they were greeted with this Manzinita centerpiece. It was decorated with floral orbs and hanging candles.

Each chair in church was dressed with ivory chair covers and hand tied champagne sashes.

At the front of the church there were two six foot manzanita trees setting a beautiful back drop for the ceremony.

I love this picture! What every bride dreams about, the walk down the aisle. Jamie and her father await the doors opening for her to make the long awaited trip down the aisle.

Jamie had made these moss initial letters that were hung on the door.

...And they are Mr. and Mrs.! Ryan and Jamie share a kiss just before their Trolley ride to the reception. Elegant Trolley's provided the transportation.

Even though the weather was beautiful, the bridesmaids used their umbrellas for a prop during photos outside the reception hall the Hyatt Lodge.

Here you see one of the beautiful centerpieces provided by Phillips Flowers. This cylinder arrangement includes Green Hydrangea, Curly willow and Purple Dendrobium Orchids.

The tables were dressed in a aubergine pin tuck table cloth with sashes to match, provided by Carousel Linen.

The weekend prior to the wedding Jamie and Ryan's families handmade these table numbers

The Head Table was decorated with tall cylinder vases adorned with a beaded wire accent and held floating candles.

To complete the look the bridesmaid bouquets were placed in vases along the table.

As a surprise to Ryan, Jamie had a 3D replica Wrigley Field cake created by The Cake Girls, as his grooms cake.

They even place their names and wedding date on the Marquee! Love the little details

The wedding cake created by Rolf's Patisserie was decorated with a simple Apple Green ribbon and Green Cymbidium Orchids.

The Apple Green and Deep Plum was even captured in the cocktail napkins.

We had such a wonderful time working with Jamie and Ryan. I have to say for the record that Ryan's heartfelt speech to Jamie at the reception had me reaching in my emergency kit for some tissue. Happy tears were shed all over the room for Ryan and Jamie and their strong love for each other.

We had a blast this Sunday at the NIU Bridal Expo. Aubrey and I enjoyed mingling with vendors and meeting so many wonderful brides. It is so exciting to speak with brides that are just as much in love with weddings as we are. It really was a great show we are excited to start meeting with all the brides we met at the show. Just a few months ago I had a Client email me to find out the items that I traditionally carry in my Emergency Kit. She wanted to make a mini one for her friend who was getting married.
