What is la di?

It is very common during my initial consultations that I get asked about my business name. Some believe it is pronounced "lady (ladi)" Some ask why I left out the da (la di da)!

But my favorite was a consultation I had with one of my current bride and grooms. The groom was very quiet through the entire meeting so I asked if he had any questions. He said, "Yes, what is la di?" I laughed and told him this story!

As I was taking all the steps to start my business I ran into a pitfall. It came time to declare my business name and I was stumped! I wanted something unique yet sophisticated. And I wanted the name to be meaningful to me.

I had asked my family and friends to help me brain storm names. There were lots of names that we discussed but nothing that felt right.

While over at my parents one night we sat on the back porch throwing out names: Elegant Events, Amanda's Events, Fabulous Events, Soiree, Bash.........

Then it happened!!! My mom was frustrated that we hadnt found the name and she said;

"Oh Amanda, I dont know what to call your business!! When someone calls me and wants help with a party I just say, Let Amanda Do It!!"

And the name was created!! I thought "Let Amanda Do It" was long for a name so I shortened it to la di. And that is what la di is!

Who pays for what?

When it comes to the division of costs between the Bride and Grooms families there is really no traditional way anymore. Lots of couples are even paying for their weddings themselves these days. But I was just asked yesterday, "what was the traditional division of costs?" I have listed it here below:

Expenses for the Bride and her Family:
  • Invitations and all announcements
  • Bridal gown and accessories
  • Ceremony fees including musicians
  • Reception, including food, cake, and beverages
  • Floral decor for Ceremony, reception and Bridesmaids flowers
  • Photographer
  • Videographer
  • Brides gifts for attendants
  • Brides gift to groom
  • Grooms wedding ring

Expenses for the Groom and his Family:

  • Brides Engagement and wedding rings
  • Gift to bride
  • Gifts to attendants
  • Officiant fee
  • Brides Bouquet
  • Boutonnieres for grooms attendants
  • Marriage licence
  • Honeymoon
  • Rehearsal dinner

Where do I hold my bouquet?

Today is Friday! And the most common day to hold your wedding rehearsal. When it comes to rehearsal there are always questions that come up. That is what rehearsal is for, to learn and practice for the actual ceremony. One of the most common questions I get as the bridesmaids wait to walk down the aisle is "Where do I hold my bouquet?" The best way I have found to keep the bridesmaids consistant is by placeing your thumbs at your belly button.
So as you are waiting to walk down the aisle just remember, "thumbs at the belly button!"
Happy Friday!!

Something Blue

Something old, something new

Something borrowed, something blue

And a silver sixpence in her shoe.

We have all heard this poem and most brides still follow the tradion. But what does it really mean? Here is the history behind the poem:

Each item in this poem represents a good-luck token for the bride.

"Something old" symbolizes continuity with the bride's family and the past.

"Something new" means optimism and hope for the bride's new life ahead.

"Something borrowed" is usually an item from a happily married friend or family member, whose good fortune in marriage is supposed to carry over to the new bride. The borrowed item also reminds the bride that she can depend on her friends and family.

"Something blue", blue has been connected to weddings for centuries. In ancient Rome, brides wore blue to symbolize love, modesty, and fidelity. Christianity has long dressed the Virgin Mary in blue, so purity was associated with the color.

And finally, a silver sixpence in the bride's shoe represents wealth and financial security. It may date back to a Scottish custom of a groom putting a silver coin under his foot for good luck. For optimum fortune, the sixpence should be in the left shoe. These days, a dime or a copper penny is sometimes substituted, and many companies sell keepsake sixpences for weddings.

Colgate Wisp

While preparing for a wedding this past weekend I took a trip to the store to replenish items in my emergency kit. I needed to replace a toothbrush and mouth wash and while in the aisle I ran across Colgate wisp.
The package states that it is a mini-brush with a freshening bead, and no water needed. I was intrigued so I bought a few 4 packs.
After snacking on Subway sandwiches the bride and her maids needed to freshen up and asked me for mints. I offered them the Colgate wisp instead.
They were a hit! I tried one myself as well. Very refreshing, I was shocked. It even has a soft pick on the end for cleaning in between teeth.
They will now be a staple in my emergency kit for all brides to enjoy!

Save the Date

Are you ready to announce your wedding day? Sending out save the dates is a great way to let your guests know about your wedding date in advance.
This allows anyone traveling long distances to start making travel arrangements. They are especially great if your wedding date falls on or around a holiday.

Save the dates should be sent out atleast 4 months in advance. If you are getting married on a holiday or in a busy travel season, save the dates can be sent out sooner.

Things to include on the save the date:
  • Your names
  • Wedding date
  • Wedding website
  • Invitation to follow

You might also want to personalise your save the date with a photograph.

There are many unique types of save the dates. Here I have shown a save the date magnet from MagnetStreet. Guests can place your magnet right on their refrigerator as a constant reminder to save the date!!!

Cleaning Your Engagement Ring

He finally proposed!!!

Now you are ready to show off your ring to family and friends. Here are some tips to keep your ring sparkling!

Professional Cleaning- There is nothing that beats a Professional ring cleaning.

If you are unable to stop at the jewelers before every social gathering try these DIY options.

Windex-Yes windex!! Or any type of glass cleaner. Just spray your ring to coat, brush with a soft brush and rinse.

Dish Soap-Any Brand of liquad dish soap, place a drop on your ring, brush with a soft brush and rinse.

Toothpaste-This so happens to be my little secret! I have a special toothbrush just for my rings. I use Crest toothpaste but any brand will work. Place a small amount of toothpaste on your brush, and brush your ring just as you would your teeth. Rinse off thoroughly and Ta Da, it sparkles like new!
